Sandman's story time characters visited downtown Punta Gorda on Saturday to participate in the Charlotte County holiday parade. Sherlock Holmes, Wonder Woman, the Snow Queen, Tinkerbelle, Peter Pan, Cinderella, the Hawaiian princess, and Snow White marched through some very cold rainy weather - good thing we brought umbrellas!

UPDATE: We are excited to announce that our costumed fairy tale characters won an award in the "performing troupe" category!

A dystopia is a fictional world where people live under a highly controlled, totalitarian system. If utopia describes a society that's designed to be perfect, then dystopia is the other side of the coin - it is what happens when utopia fails. The world of literature has a lot of ideas about how utopias fail - here are a few selections to get you started on this fascinating genre.

Sandman Book Company is looking to fill an entry level TEMPORARY / SEASONAL position.

This will NOT affect our volunteer staff; the position is primarily back office / warehouse related and won't displace any of our wonderful volunteers.

Among other things, successful applicants must

    • Be able to lift 50 pounds safely.
    • Be able to bend over and pick things up off the ground.
    • Be able to remain on their feet (standing / walking) for an entire shift.
    • Be comfortable around dust (we process and clean thousands of used books daily and this is a surprisingly filthy job). Be good at cleaning (bathrooms, floors, etc). Seriously, we need Cinderella.
    • Know the alphabet song REALLY WELL.

If you are interested, or would like to see a detailed position advertisement, you can apply in person during the hours of 4 - 5 pm, Tues through Sat. Ask for Heidi.

    What is Southern Gothic Literature?

7 Fall Reading Recommendations from Sandman Book Co

    written by Rebecca Lange

    storytime

With a resident black cat roaming the bookshelves, there is no better place to find your next October read than at your local independent bookseller. And if you are looking for something literary as well as of regional interest, now is the best time of year to discover the spellbinding world of Southern Gothic fiction.

But what is Southern Gothic? From the post-apocalyptic visions of Cormac McCarthy to Karen Russell’s alligator-infested swamplands, the genre portrays the cultural history of the South through grotesque characters, disjointed family structures, the presence of social alienation and violence, as well as the collision of the supernatural with the natural.

Set amid desolate landscapes, Southern Gothic explores the uncharted depths of human nature. It pulls back the layers of normal, domestic society to peer at our true motives and to reveal the darkness that often lies beneath.

We have a few recommendations to get you hooked on the genre...

    storytime

Twenty-eight children politely wait in a semi-circle. Their patience is rewarded when a costumed man arrives: the Fairy Tale Teller (Douglas Coventry) is here to tell a story with the help of his friends, the Storybook Princesses of Sandman Book Company. The kids cheer as he introduces Maid Marian, Cinderella's Fairy Godmother, Princess Ana and her sister the Snow Queen.

But when he announces the fairy Tinkerbelle, the doorway remains empty. He calls a second time - and a third. Anxious boys and girls strain to see behind the curtain, hoping for a glimpse of their favorite character...
