What about anecdotes about his life? What about the letters he wrote? What about the speeches he made? These materials are not widely available. So those who are curious to understand Marcus Aurelius the man (as opposed to Marcus Aurelius the philosopher-king) have to rely almost completely on someone else's scholarship.
